Oasis to reunite after 15 years as Gallagher brothers bury hatchet

Tuesday, 27 August 2024

British band Oasis have announced they are reuniting, fifteen years since they last played a show.

The band will play a set of dates in 2025, with estranged brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher burying the hatchet.

The band split up in acrimonious circumstances mere hours before they were set to play a show in 2009.

Fifteen years after they split up acrimoniously, British band Oasis have announced they are set to reunite for a series of shows in 2025.

The band, who were one of the leading groups during the 90s Britpop movement alongside the likes of Blur, Pulp, and Suede, will perform once again, with 14 shows set down for the next UK Summer.

Mumblings of a reunion had been building over the last few days, and on Monday, long-time sibling rivals Noel and Liam Gallagher posted identical videos showing the date and time, 27th August 2024 at 8am.

Well, at 8am (UK time) on August 27, the reunion was confirmed, coming mere days before the 30th anniversary of the band’s debut album, Definitely Maybe, which singer Liam Gallagher had recently been celebrating with a series of shows.

The band will play shows in July and August next year, with Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin set to feature.

In a joint statement, the band said: “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”

Notably, the band will play four nights at Wembley Stadium in London, as well as four nights in their home city of Manchester at Heaton Park.

There is no word yet on who will join the Gallagher brothers in the band for the reunion, but reports suggested that former Oasis members Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock will take part on guitar and drums respectively, while Noel’s bass player in his band the High-Flying Birds Russell Pritchard will also be involved.

Oasis was formed in 1991 in Manchester and quickly shot to fame with their aforementioned 1994 album, becoming key figureheads of the Britpop craze due to anthems such as Don’t Look Back in Anger, Live Forever, and Champagne Supernova.

However, they disbanded in 2009, hours before they were set to play a festival in Paris, with Noel leaving the band following a dressing room argument with his brother.

The brothers’ relationship had been a rocky one throughout the band’s initial time together, with the pair often appearing in the media due to their dust-ups and other rock and roll antics.

Both Liam and Noel have gone on to have successful solo careers, however, the relationship between the pair remained sour, with each trading barbs at the other regularly through the media and on social media.

The brothers have kept the legacy of the band alive, though, often playing Oasis songs in each other’s solo sets.

As a result, the band has managed to expose their music to a new generation of fans, and maintains a hefty 21.6 million Spotify listeners monthly. They have also sold over 75 million albums worldwide.

Demand is expected to be huge for the reunion shows, with industry experts saying the Gallagher brothers are set to pocket around £50 million (NZ$100m) each.

There is no word yet on whether they will make their way to New Zealand, having last played here in 1998, however, a press release to accompany the announcement said that “plans are underway” for the reunion to go beyond Europe later in 2025.

Tickets go on sale at 9am (UK time) on August 31.
