Watch: The moment Oasis fell apart
Wednesday, 28 August 2024
Oasis announced they are reuniting 15 years after they last played a show, so let’s look back on that tension -filled last gig in what was, until now, the final days of the iconic British band.
Noel and Liam Gallagher have announced they will play dates in 2025 with the estranged brothers seemingly burying the hatchet.
Back in 2009 the band split up in acrimonious circumstances just hours before they were set to play a show in Paris.
The band’s last gig took place on August 22, 2009 at the now defunct V Festival in the UK.
The set included Cigarettes & Alcohol, Half The World Away, an acoustic version of Wonderwall and a cover of the Beatles’ I Am The Walrus.
The set seemed tense and according to the BBC seemed to end abruptly.
Watch the video above as vocalist Liam holds his head his hands and then looks over in disgust as guitarist Noel continues to sing.
It was later announced Liam was diagnosed with laryngitis and the band cancelled their second V Festival performance.
Just six nights later on August 28 Oasis were due to play Paris’ Rock en Seine festival but it did not happen.
Instead Noel quit the band.
The Gallaghers got into a fight and pulled out just before they were due onstage with with organisers displaying a message explaining an “altercation” had caused the cancellation.
Noel posted a statement on Oasisinet.com saying:
“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” he wrote.
“People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
For years the very public spat between the brothers endured.
The band were one of the leading groups during the 90s Britpop movement alongside the likes of Blur, Pulp, and Suede, will perform once again, with 14 shows set down for the next UK Summer.
Oasis will play next July and August in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin.
As it stands the tour schedule leaves Oasis free to headline Glastonbury 2025.
Oasis super fans may want to secure tickets to one of their first shows - just in case the band won’t make it through the whole tour.
