Eden Park will be allowed to host twice as many concerts per year after having its consent approved.
The Auckland stadium will now be able to host 12 concerts featuring six different artists.
Recently, the ground has played host to the likes of Coldplay and Travis Scott.
Eden Park will be allowed to host up to 12 concerts per year featuring six different artists after having its resource consent application approved.
Up until now the stadium had only been allowed to host six concerts per year, after being first granted approval to host them in 2021.
Their application to double the number of shows received over 2000 submissions, with 94% in favour of the move.
Eden Park had made a big push to host more concerts at the stadium, even knocking down part of a stand to increase the capacity.
The Lower West Stand was demolished in September, increasing the capacity of the ground by between 5000 and 10,000 spectators.
This took the total capacity of the stadium to between 55,000 and 65,000.
In announcing the news, Eden Park CEO Nick Sautner called the decision a landmark moment for Auckland and New Zealanders, saying it will allow the venue greater flexibility in offering artists the chance to perform multiple shows.
Sautner said this will make Auckland a more attractive stop on artists global tours.
“Concerts at Eden Park have become integral to our country’s cultural landscape, delivering significant economic and social benefits to our local community, city and country.”
“Live concerts at Eden Park create over 3000 jobs for each event and attract thousands of visitors to our city, boosting our tourism, hospitality and accommodation sectors while also providing much-needed escapism and entertainment for people.”
In recent months, the venue has hosted shows by the likes of Travis Scott and Coldplay, the latter which attracted over 160,000 fans to the venue across multiple nights.
“These shows delivered millions to our GDP,” Sautner said.
He added that Eden Park will continue working with promoters to bring international artists to New Zealand as a result of the decision.
Six60, Ed Sheeran, Guns N’ Roses, and Billy Joel are among the artists who have played concerts at Eden Park during the last three years.
American country star Luke Combs is the next act to be hosted by Eden Park, with two shows scheduled for January 2025.
