Ford New Zealand has announced that it will be bringing the Mustang Mach-E to New Zealand, with the popular EV set to arrive here early next year.

The Mach-E first went on sale in the USA in December 2020 and was an instant success, so much so that Ford announced in April this year that it was to stop accepting orders for 2022 production, as it was essentially sold out.

Right-hand drive pre-production prototypes were spotted as early as 2019, and the Mach-E went on sale in the UK in RHD form in late 2020 as well.

“The Mach-E is one of the most exciting vehicles Ford has ever introduced, and it will be amazing on New Zealand roads,” said Simon Rutherford, Managing Director, Ford New Zealand.

“For us, this is a big success already – it’s taken a lot of work behind the scenes, but now we’re very excited to be launching this incredible vehicle to our customers.”

While Ford New Zealand has yet to reveal what models and specification will go on sale here – saying that full model specification and pricing details will be announced closer to its New Zealand market launch – in the US the Mach-E is available in Standard Range form with a 68kWh battery and Extended Range with an 88kWh battery, both of which can be had in either RWD or AWD.

The Standard Range comes in either Select or Premium trims, while the Extended Range drops the entry Select model and adds a mid-spec RWD California Route 1 and a top-spec high-performance GT model.

The Standard Range Mach-E’s pack 198kW in either RWD or AWD guise, while torque differs, with the RWD producing 430Nm and the AWD 580Nm. The Extended Range models go from 216kW for the RWD models up to a healthy 358kW for the AWD GT. WLTP-tested ranges are between 400km and 610km, depending on model.

Unlike the ICE Mustangs, the Mach-E is built in Mexico for global markets, while in early 2021, Ford announced that it would also be produced in China by the Changan Ford joint venture for the Chinese domestic market.

Ford New Zealand is aiming to have seven new electrified vehicles on sale in the country by the end of 2024, having already moved to offer electrified powertrains – PHEVs and hybrids – across most of its passenger, SUV and van range, while the company’s first full battery electric commercial vehicle to go on sale here, the new Ford E-Transit, will be arriving later this year.

Ford says that it is working with Singer Electric to ensure a smooth roll-out for its electrification plans in New Zealand. Having already rolled out charging stations to all of its main dealer sites across the country, the company is currently in the process of expanding this to all dealerships. Installations include customer forecourt charging stations and charging capabilities in service areas.
