Associate Professor Tom Roa for Stuff’s series of oral essays ‘The Treaty and Me’.

Associate Professor Tom Roa (Waikato-Tainui/Ngāti Maniapoto) is a former chairman of the Waikato-Tainui tribal governance arm, known at the time as Te Kauhanganui.

He teaches advanced te reo Māori and on Māori development. In 2016, he was appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal.

In Stuff's video series The Treaty and Me, Roa asks if the term 'tino rangatiratanga' - used to mean absolute authority in Te Tiriti o Waitangi - is the correct term.
