Passenger named in fatal Kingston head-on bus crash

Twenty-three-year-old American Spencer Jason Hom Dow died when the car he was a passenger in collided head-on with a bus carrying 14 people in Otago.

The second man in the car, who died in Dunedin Hospital overnight, was also a 23-year-old American. He was the driver of the car that crashed into a bus while passing a truck on double yellow lines on State Highway 6, near Kingston, on November 1.

In statement, police said they could not release the second man's name yet.

A police spokesperson said the crash was still being investigated and the matter had been referred to the coroner.

The two men met in New Zealand and were travelling around the country together.

Eight people on the bus were injured in the crash, which happened about 15 kilometres south of the area known as the Devil's Staircase. 

None of their injuries were life threatening.

The incident followed another head-on fatal crash in the area on October 14.

Kingston resident Harpreet Singh, 25, was on the wrong side of the road on the Devil's Staircase when he hit a tourist bus carrying 14 people.
