A witness said the water conditions weren't great and the water was choppy with 'a bit of swell'.
He watched as the man, who was at the beach with what looked like a group of mates, was pulled from the water and had CPR performed on him.
The witness said the man looked responsive when the rescue helicopter arrived.
'Paramedics were working on him and brought him back, but he had a really weak pulse and needed assisted breathing until the helicopter showed up.'
A spokesman for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust said the man had been snorkelling.
He said CPR was already in progress when the helicopter arrived.
Rapid sequence intubation was used to assist the man's breathing, before he was flown to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition, he said.
Police were in the process of contacting the man's family.
The death had been referred to the Coroner.
