What’s new on Stuff’s bold, bright website and apps
Monday, 22 January 2024
We couldn’t be prouder of the new Stuff website and apps, and we hope you’ve been enjoying the experience this week. Our updated world-class tech stack means that we can be fast and flexible for our audience and clients. It also means we can quickly update things.
If you want to know about the new features, read more here.
Thousands of people have told us what they love about the new Stuff, as well as what they don’t, and we so appreciate the time you’ve taken to do that. We’ve read it all, and thought we’d take the opportunity to address some of the common themes that have cropped up. We hope the following answers are helpful.
If you’re using our apps, please make sure you’re on the latest version!
Where is regional news?
You’ve flagged that our amazing regional titles such as Taranaki Daily News and Nelson Mail weren’t easy to find, so we’ve updated the main menu on the top left to specifically highlight Regions and make finding the news that matters to you and your community just a couple of clicks away.
How do I find local death notices?
We’ve added a button to all our regional mastheads which directly links to local death notices. For example, if you’re looking for death notices in Timaru, head to the main menu in the top left, open regions, choose Timaru Herald, and then open up death notices. Look for this purple button.
A comprehensive death notices page can also be found in the main menu at the top left under More.
Why do I have to sign in to do the quiz?
Signing in to Stuff has always been required for some features, such as commenting, and receiving our Stuff Daily newsletter. We’re simply now extending the sign-in scope across the site. It will allow us over time to see how popular certain content and features are on the site, and to serve you with a more personalised experience. One personalised new feature is removing the bold headlines on stories that you’ve already read so you can quickly move to the stories you haven’t yet caught up on.
We continue to protect your privacy and data as we always have and you can read more about our protections and policies here.
How can I access the daily quiz?
You can find a link to all our quizzes in the navigation bar beneath the Stuff logo at the top of the homepage, or in the News section of the main menu.
The most recent quiz still lives in its trusty spot in Editors’ Picks.
UPDATED: If you were having issues with the quiz on an iPad, please update your app.
Where’s the search bar? And what happened to the saved stories function on the app?
They’re gone (for now). A number of legacy features from the old digital products that weren’t being widely used did not get carried over for relaunch. The search function and saved stories are among them. We are continuing to build and update though, and we’re noting the feedback we’re getting from readers.
UPDATED: Why did I hit a purple screen of death?
Some users weren’t able to experience the goodness of the new Stuff because they were stuck on a purple screen or a loading ‘S’. That sucked, but it’s now been sorted. Hooray!
There were a few reasons for it, including ad blockers installed by large organisations. To support an independent NZ business, you can ask your IT department to remove ad blockers, as advertising revenue is our primary revenue stream on Stuff.co.nz.
UPDATED: Do I still get sent back to the top of the page after reading an article?
No! We fixed this, so your reading journey is now seamless. Make sure you’re using the most recent version of the app.
Why am I getting an error message when I follow a link to a story from Google?
We’ve brought nearly a million stories over to our new site, and the remainder of our substantial archive will be available very soon. In the meantime, there may be occasional dead links that we’ll need to tidy up. We recommend you bookmark Stuff.co.nz or download the app and come directly to us to keep on top of the news and then you’ll never miss a beat.
I like to follow news via an RSS reader. How can I keep track of Stuff?
BEHOLD - here are the links:
Why did you pick mint green and purple?
Because we love it.
Keep the feedback coming and we’ll continue to update this page.
