Myrtle, a popular Wellington bakery that won best outstanding bakery at the Welly Hospo Awards only 5 days ago, will close its doors right before Christmas.

In a statement to social media, owners Sarah Bullock and Jacob Brown said their last day of trade will be December 21.

The owners don’t intend to relocate, as “the character of the building, its unique position, and the warmth and support of the people who visit us, are not just part of our story — they are our story.“

In an Instagram post, owners Sarah Bullock and Jacob Brown said their last day of trade will be December 21.

“Over time, we’ve come to realise just how deeply intertwined our identity is with the place and community that surrounds us,” the statement says.

Because of this, the owners don’t intend to relocate.

“This is not necessarily the last you’ll see of us. Having some downtime will undoubtedly inspire new ideas and who knows where that might lead.”

The bakery opened in 2021.

The bakery is named after Bullock’s grandmother, Myrtle, who was a wonderful baker “and the essence of love”, Bullock said in 2022.

Meanwhile, Wellington-based Alamir Bakery, which has produced Lebanese food for 32 years, went into liquidation on December 3.

The company, known for supplying products such as hummus, pita bread, tahini, falafel and baba ghanouj to Foodstuffs and Woolworths stores across the country, went into liquidation on Tuesday, according to the Companies Register.

Heath Gair of Palliser Insolvency has been appointed liquidator.
