Blues snag playmaker Cam Millar from the Highlanders

The Blues have snagged first five-eighth Cam MIllar from the Highlanders.
Millar’s move north has been signposted in recent months, and was confirmed by the Blues on Tuesday afternoon.
While the Highlanders have snared plenty of talent from the Blues - think Malakai Fekitoa and Caleb Tangitau, to name a couple - Millar’s move north is rare.
However, it is also no surprise given the Highlanders signed Chief Josh Jacomb, essentially relegating the 24-year-old Otago Boys’ High School product.
Indeed, he heads north after four seasons in the Highlanders’ environment, establishing himself as a steady playmaker and arguably the most accurate goal kicker in the country.
“I'm incredibly grateful for everything the Highlanders and the Otago rugby community have done for me over the past few years. They’ve played a huge role in my development, and I’ll always appreciate the opportunities I was given there,” Millar said.
“The chance to join the Blues is one I’m really excited about. There are quality players and coaches throughout the club, and I’m looking forward to learning from them and doing everything I can to contribute to the team’s success.”
Millar made his Super Rugby Pacific debut for the Highlanders against the Western Force in 2023 as injury cover, before securing a full contract for the 2024 season.
Millar made 34 appearances for the southern franchise, which has also signed former Moana Pasifika pivot Patrick Pellegrini ahead of the 2027 season.
Blues general manager of rugby Murray Williams said Millar was an excellent fit for the Auckland-based franchise, which has lost Stephen Perofeta to Japan ahead of next year’s competition.
“Cam is a talented player who has continued to improve every season and has shown composure whenever he’s been given opportunities at Super Rugby level,” he said.
“He has an excellent kicking game, manages matches well and understands how to control the tempo of a game. Those qualities are difficult to teach, particularly in a young playmaker.”
