Tuesday, 28 October 2025

Labour says it is going to campaign on a capital gains tax - excluding the family home and farms.

After much speculation the Labour Party early on Tuesday morning announced the first details of its capital gains tax, which it would enact if elected in 2026. Here is a selection of how The Post readers responded.

“I'm a 'Mum and Dad Investor' and I support a CGT, because I support the idea that we are a community and should help each other.”

“Long over due, house flippers…its time to cough up!”

“I’m on a pension and pay $18 for a visit to my doctor. Labour’s idea will save me $54 a year. Whoppee.”

“Great idea, It just might work.”

“…three free appointments a year will make a difference for those oh low-incomes.”

“This parasitic non productive debt leveraged tax avoidance loophole has extracted billions of dollars but for no gain for NZ. The banks and landlords are a wealthy and determined lobby and will fight this kicking and screaming all the way to the election. Bring it on.”

“This is at most a bandaid and a pathetic attempt to regain power.”

“I don't mind this one, a tax on capital has been inevitable and we are very much the outlier in global standing for not having one…On face value (sans details) this appears reasonable and workable compared to previous attempts and the horrendous wealth tax.”

“One part of society has a tax free gain whilst the other part don't.”

“If you have an issue with house flippers then you need to ask your local MP why they have let IRD be negligent in that area.”

“Very well done by Labour - it is fair on applying capital taxes in a way that levels the investment playing field but exempts the family home. And using it for free doctors visits is well targeted, desperately needed…”
