Hamilton Central Library's new facade is finished
Wednesday, 15 April 2026
A facelift for Hamilton Central Library is complete and has fixed long‑standing leaks.
The 50-year-old building spent months behind scaffolding as part of the $2.4 million project, which brought a new look to the Garden Place frontage.
It features a whakataukii cast in shadows across the building during the day and a grid of LED lights.
Inside the building is a 140,000‑item collection and historical archives, which Hamilton City Council said would be protected by the changes.
There had been “long‑standing water tightness issues in hard‑to‑access areas… which did not have a simple fix”, a statement said.
As well as addressing that, the upgrade lets more natural light into the library and includes design elements developed in collaboration with mana whenua.
The library is much more than a building, Community Committee chairperson Emma Pike said in a statement.
“It’s a place of learning, connection and belonging for people of all ages. This upgrade strengthens the library's resilience for the future, reflects the stories and identity of our city, and ensures it remains a welcoming, vibrant space in the heart of Hamilton for generations to come.”
It was visited more than 145,000 times in 2025 and hosted 430 events, the council said.
Hamilton City Libraries director Paula Murdoch thanked “our loyal library customers and neighbours” for their patience during the work.
“This project was always about more than just fixing leaks, it’s about protecting the collections and ensuring the Central Library remains a safe, welcoming, and fit‑for‑purpose space for everyone.”
The new facade incorporates a whakataukii, with metal letters place to use natural light to cast moving shadows across the building during the day, the council said.
A grid of LED lights on the facade can create digital art displays and will light up Garden Place in the evenings. The panels are designed to deter birds from landing.
