A body believed to be that of missing fisherman Myung Kang has washed up at Woodhill Forest Beach, near Muriwai in West Auckland.

The body was found by a member of the public, who notified police shortly after 8pm on Thursday. The 57-year-old Korean man went missing at Bethells Beach on Saturday, January 5.

Search and Rescue teams, lifeguards and the police helicopter were involved in the extensive search to find him since his family reported him missing on Sunday evening.

'Police's thoughts and condolences are with Mr Kang's family at this very upsetting time,' a police spokesperson said on Friday.

'Police would like thank all of those people involved in the search and the members of the public who came forward with information and sightings of Mr Kang.'

On Wednesday Kang's belongings washed up at O'Neils Bay, including clothing and a fishing bag.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
