Cordons were in place in Botany Rd at Millhouse Drive and Golfland Drive.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area if possible, police said.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics had treated two other patients at the crash scene.

One had moderate injuries and the other had minor injuries.

They were being transported to Middlemore Hospital.

Shopkeepers in the area said they heard a bang as the cars collided.

Ormiston Rd was closed between Murphys Rd and Azzurro Way from 2.10pm.

Two others received moderate injuries.

The fatal crash takes this year's road toll to 110.

On Wednesday, a person died after a car and a light truck collided in Templeview, near Hamilton, and a woman died in a separate crash in Wellsford, north Auckland.

Earlier this week, national road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally said he was struggling to find the right word to describe the 2018 road toll.

'Last year I used the word appalling but this year I'm struggling, perhaps the right word is heartbreaking.'
